After two public forums and two board meetings where public input was heard and considered, several changes were made to the original drafts of the redistricting plans for elementary and middle school. At the regularly scheduled board meeting, March 10, 2008, the board voted on the final maps as they are posted below.

If you believe that attending the school your child is zoned for will cause you or your child a hardship, you may fill out a Hardship Waiver. Hardship Requests must be returned to the Central Office by April 15. You will be notified by mail of the committee's final decision.  Please note that if the Hardship Waiver is granted, you will be responsible for your child's transportation to and from school.

Update on Redistricting progress (2/5/08)

Redistricting Committee members consisting of parents, community members, and LCS Staff have met twice to provide input into redistricting draft. Additionally, The LCS Board of Education, Executive Staff, and school principals have reviewed the tentative plan.

The preliminary redistricting maps are now available on the Internet.

Where We Are Now (11/12/07)

The Lowndes County School Board will begin the redistricting process early in January 2008. Parker Mathis Elementary will no longer be used as an elementary school due to its limited capacity. Westside Elementary School, a state of the art facility, will open summer 2008 and will house students from Parker Mathis and other area elementary schools in an effort to prevent overcrowding.

During this redistricting process, district lines will be redrawn for elementary and middle schools due to the opening of a new middle school summer 2009.

Lowndes County Schools are committed to open communication and input from all stakeholders. We will provide continuous updates as they are available. Below is a draft of the timeline for the redistricting process which will be continuously updated.

  1. Board members and the superintendent will appoint committee members consisting of parents, community and/or business members, and staff who will potentially be affected by redistricting.
  2. In early January, the superintendent will meet with the committee and solicit input.
  3. The board will review recommendations at their board retreat January 18-20th.
  4. The proposal/s will be posted on the website for public review and submission of comments.
  5. Two community forums will be held in late January early February.
  6. We anticipate a board decision late in February or early March.
