The Future Educators participated in the Literacy Fair at Sam's on Sept. 19th. Members Shayla Samaras and Laura Hanna manned the booth from 10-2. Twenty four agencies and groups were on hand to promote literacy. The FEA booth promoted an upcoming event, Read for the Record, which encourages community wide reading on October the 8th. The goal is to set a world record by having the most people read a common book on the same day. This years book is the Very Hungry Catepillar.

For the two weeks following the Literacy Fair the FEA group sponsored a school wide book drive at LHS. The book drive was an extension of the collaborative county wide being coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and Sam's. Local agencies such as Lamp and the Haven as well as literacy groups petition the Chamber for donations of children's books. Once the books have been collected they are sorted by reading levels then dispersed to participating groups. The community wide goal was to collect 3000 children's books.

The LHS FEA collected a total of 1984 books. The students competed as a class against other classes. The class donating the most books received a Bruster's ice cream party. The winners were; 1st - Lori Bennet's class, 2nd - Dr. Wood's class and 3rd Madame Webb's class. These three classes alone contributed over 1000 books.
